Reports

We are a small but professional Highway Department committed to serving the citizens and visitors of the Town of Thomaston. Our department currently consists of eight employees.

1 Superintendent
1 Group Leader
5 Maintainers
1 Mechanic

The Superintendent of Highways is responsible for all roadways, solid waste including the Transfer Station, and acts as Tree Warden.

The Department is responsible for all the property that the taxpayers of the Town of Thomaston own. This includes, but is not limited to, all buildings, roads, roadsides and parks.

We currently have six plow routes plus municipal parking lots. Sidewalks are cleared after the end of the storm with a skid steer loader. We maintain roads to a passable level during the peak of the storm. This level will differ depending on the rate of snowfall. Each section is approximately 4-7 miles long. Each section takes about 3-4 hours for a round trip depending on weather conditions.

The Mechanic is responsible for the preventative maintenance on all town owned vehicles, including police cruisers, fire trucks and ambulances. The mechanic also acts as a maintainer when the need arises.

The Fleet is currently 100% International, with a variety of manufacturers dump bodies. The newest is a 2006 International 7500 series 6 wheeled dump truck with an Everest combination body and Swenson Pre Wet system for using de-icing chemicals.

During winter storms there is a parking ban. To get information on parking bans, turn to  WVIT-Channel 30, WFSB-Channel 3, WTNH-Channel 8 on television and WZBG FM97.3,WTIC AM-1080 on the radio.

The Town currently has 919 catch basins that are cleaned on the average of once every other year. Sweeping programs start annually in the beginning of April.

Upcoming Road & Sidewalk Projects

Thanks to the taxpayers of Thomaston, the 7 year road program will start this year with the year one roads. The entire year one list will not be completed before winter. We will make every effort to get as much done as the weather permits us. We will have an update page as the project gets off the ground.

Also design work on Phase 2 of the sidewalk rehab project has been started. B&L Companies from Meriden will be perform survey and design work in various locations over the next month.

Altair Ave. culvert repair will begin on July 28th. watch for updates and photos of the work on the Photo Gallery page.
